Biographical History

Sister M. Madeleva (1887-1964), CSC, born Mary Evaline Wolff, was an American poet and nun.

In 1905 she joined the Sisters of the Holy Cross. She received her bachelor's degree from St. Mary's College in 1909, a master's from the University of Notre Dame in 1918, and a doctorate from the University of Southern California in 1925, as well as receiving numerous other honorary degrees from universities around the country. She eventually became president of Saint Mary's College (1934-1961) and authored 70 books in her lifetime. At St. Mary's she established the Graduate School of Sacred Theology in 1944, the first of its kind for women.
