Denise Levertov (1923-1997) was an American poet. Originally born in England, she emigrate to the United States in 1948 and became an American citizen in 1955. She actively protested the Vietnam War in the 1960s and 70s and worked as a poetry editor for both the Nation (1961-1965) and Mother Jones (1975-1978). In the 1980s she moved into academia, teaching at a variety of institutions including Stanford University (1982-1993). She died in 1997 of complications due to lymphoma.
The Denise Levertov Interview Transcript consists of a 58 page typescript of Levertov's interview with Walter Sutton on 16-17 Jan 1964. Levertov speaks at length about poets that have influenced her, the history of modern poetry, and her own writing process and style. Levertov also corrected the finished typescript.
The interview was originally published in the Minnesota Review in 1965 and was later republished in the book Conversations with Denise Levertov, edited by Jewel Spears Brooker.
