Scope and Contents of the Collection

Central New York Trade Catalogs and Business Ephemera contains correspondence, photographs, and printed material from a wide variety of businesses in and around Syracuse New York.

Correspondence contains miscellaneous letters, receipts, orders, etc relating to central New York businesses and on business letterhead.

Photographs contains a photograph of the staff of a machine shop, September 1892.

Printed material contains ephemera, privately printed merchants' scrip, and trade cards and catalogs.

Ephemera contains announcements, publicity, checks, stock certificates, and other miscellaneous items. Among other things, there is a small publication giving a brief history (with photos) of Mary Elizabeth Evans' Candy Kitchen, a business based in Syracuse but with outlets in other cities including one on Fifth Avenue in New York City, and an announcement of the formation of National Banker's Express Company (similar to Wells Fargo). Also here, from Litchfield, is a subscription form for a book to be published: "an octavo volume...on the domestic relations of husband and wife, guardian and ward, parent and child, master and servant."

Merchants' scrip contains 39 private issue notes, most from banks in the area.

Businesses represented by Trade cards include confectioners, liquor stores, shoe companies, dry goods, clothiers, and artists' supplies. Trade catalogs also cover a wide range of businesses, including Syracuse Cart Company, Protectall (safes and chests), Baker Dash Works (carriage tops and trimmings), J.R. Clancy (theatrical stage supplies), Perry Seed Store, Elmwood Stud (Percheron horses, in Scipio), American Seating Company (school tables and chairs), and Smith Typewriters.

Miscellaneous includes a journal and related correspondence for an auto garage in Navarino, New York.
