Little is known of the Biddle family beyond what is given in the collection. They evidently lived in Pennsylvania, probably in Philadelphia. According to Edward Biddle's The life and works of Thomas Sully 1783-1872 (Philadelphia:1921), Meta Craig Biddle (1825-1913 or 1918) was married to Lt. James Stokes Biddle (1818-1900) of Philadelphia. According to the Philadelphia Social Register of 1904, the couple -- along with Jane Biddle and Nicholas Biddle, relationship unspecified -- lived at 1714 Locust Street in Philadelphia. Adele (1828-1909) was Meta's sister. Jane (1830-1915) was Meta's sister-in-law.
