Librarian Pamela Whiteley McLaughlin is the Director of Communications and External Relations at Syracuse University Libraries. She oversees a comprehensive and integrated communications program and manages the unit responsible for promoting the Libraries. McLaughlin leads the development and implementation of communications strategies, policies, and practices in support of the Library’s mission and formulates creative approaches to effectively represent SU Library's vision and agenda to its various constituents. She advises the Library leadership on internal and external communication strategies and assists with organizing and defining messages, researching and writing stories, and creating and executing press strategy. In addition, she is responsible for creating press releases, talking points, Q&A, and other briefing materials, managing the release of Library news, and responding to related press inquiries. She serves as senior editor for all Library print and online publications, including the Library website, and has overall responsibility for the Libraries' exhibitions program.
McLaughlin has held a number of prior positions at Syracuse University Libraries, including Director of Digital Library Development, Head of Access and Digital Services, and Electronic Resources Librarian. She began her professional career as a reference and instruction librarian at Penfield Library at the SUNY College at Oswego. She is a member of the Council on University Communications and has been an adjunct faculty member in the SU School of Information Studies. McLaughlin is past president of the board of the Central New York Library Resources Council and has held leadership positions in a number of other professional organizations. She is a frequent speaker, singer, trainer, and consultant in the region. She holds a B.A. from the SUNY College at Oswego and an M.L.S. from the Syracuse University School of Information Studies.
