The Syracuse University Libraries Facility ("The Facility") is a newly constructed 20,000 square foot high-density storage facility that will house approximately 1.2 million volumes. Providing an ideal environment of 50 degrees and 30% humidity, the facility significantly extends the life of library materials and allows for overall growth in SU Libraries' collections.
Material is stored in The Facility's vault on 12-foot moveable shelving. With this distinctive shelf mobility and height, The Facility utilizes an innovative and unique model for providing high-density storage. The environmental conditions of the vault are kept constant using state-of-the art canvas ductwork and optimal shelf spacing around the clock. In addition to the vault storage area, the Facility building also includes a large processing area and a high-tech conference room.
The Facility will house a large variety of material including books, journals, rare and archival material, video and audio recordings, maps, architectural tubes and microfilm/fiche.
See Syracuse University Libraries Facility Requests for instructions on how to place a request. Service to the material includes next-business day delivery Sunday through Friday. Journal articles are scanned and delivered electronically and physical items are delivered to Bird Library for pick-up. Upon special request, an appointment may be made for special use of material in the conference room of The Facility.

Items in The Facility may be requested by SU faculty, students and staff as well as visitors, guests and other non-affiliates through the Libraries' Classic Catalog. See Syracuse University Libraries Facility Requests for instructions on how to place a request. Requests will be fulfilled and delivered by next business day Sunday through Friday.
When placing requests, SU faculty, students and staff will be prompted to log in with their NetID and password. Books and other physical items will be processed within the Classic Catalog, delivered to Bird Library and held at the Circulation Desk awaiting patron pick-up. Additionally, faculty may request delivery to their departmental office through the Library to Go service.
Requests for articles from journals should begin in the library’s Classic Catalog, which will then connect the user to ILLiad (SU’s ILL system) for request and delivery of articles. After locating the needed journal title within the catalog, patrons will then be prompted to select the volume in which the article appears. The request information will be carried from the catalog to ILLiad. Use of the library’s catalog for article requests ensures the fastest electronic delivery of the article to the patron.
Visitors and Non-SU Affiliates
Non-SU affiliates may place requests for items in The Facility. In a request web form, visitors and non-affiliates will be prompted for their name, email address and phone number in addition to information about the item. Books and other physical items will be delivered to Bird Library and held at the circulation desk awaiting patron pick-up. In-house use of items will be provided if the patron does not have Guest Borrowing privileges. For article requests, patrons will be provided with secure access to an electronic scan of the article.
