Making Books With Children

On August 22nd, the Department of Preservation and Conservation was pleased to host a bookmaking workshop for the children of Syracuse University Library staff. A similar, much smaller workshop held last year, leading to requests for wider participation, something we were able to honor this year with great success. It is something we will gladly repeat in the future for kids small and large.

The children (ages 6-16) collected images in advance of the workshop that they would use to decorate their books. The selected book structure was the accordion, a simple structure that provided many opportunities for adding images and text, as well as pop-ups and other interactive features. A handout was created by work-study student Ashley Kanaley who also led the workshop with fellow work-study Terez Iacovino. Both are in the printmaking program at VPA. They were assisted by the entire staff of the department.
