MACs and opening PDFs: workarounds

  • Problem: Preview, the default pdf viewer for pdfs on MACs, does not always work well with some providers
  • Solution: Here are some workaround s for pdfs that give errors or do not open normally, whether on-campus or off; control mouse click, then select appropriate action based on your browser:

Mac Safari: control mouse click, download linked file, then save to your desktop or other location.
Mac Firefox: control mouse click, change option to save file, then save to your desktop or other location.

All ASHRAE titles

  • Problem: pdfs require a setting change and a plug-in to view

  • Solution: First, adjust Adobe settings, based on your version of Adobe:

    Adobe Reader 9
    1) Open Adobe Reader 9
    2) Got to Edit>Preferences>Trust Manager
    3) At the top it says PDF file attachments and there is a box that says 'Allow
    opening of non-PDF...applications'
    4) Uncheck that box, then click OK.
    5) Close Acrobat Reader

    Adobe Reader X
    1. Open Acrobat Reader X
    2. Go to Edit>Preferences> General
    3. you will see a box checked that says Enable Protected Mode at Startup
    4) Uncheck the box, then click OK.
    4. Now close Acrobat Reader.

    Second, download plug-in at:

    1. File Open Plugin:   PC User Click here:

SFX/E-journal locator

Not all publishers can process Year, Volume, Issue and Start page from a citation. This is common when using SU Links from a database. First try to take out Start page, then issue, if an error message is received. In most cases, users will have to renavigate to the issue needed when they reach the journal site. See Wiley error message for instances when users either have to take out the filled in info., or follow the workaround below. (3/24/11)

Wiley and formerly Blackwell titles

Please note that if you see a list of issues that have a separating line on a Wiley site, this means that we will likely not have access to the pre-1997 issues. We never purchased backfile acess to any Blackwell titles. If the holdings state otherwise, please let us know. (4/22/09)

Wiley error message

If you are using SU Links for a Wiley title and your screen says, "Sorry, an error has occurred," go back to the SU Links screen, delete Year, Volume, Issue, and Start page. Click on the Go button and you will then see your article. (8/27/10)
