Video, Limited Access, and Music (4th floor)

Collections

Video and Film Collection

The Syracuse University Library has nearly 4,000 DVDs, 8,000 VHS and 800 16mm films that cover all subject areas. This collection is located in Video, Limited Access, and Music area on 4th floor, Bird Library. All items in the video/film collection can be found in the online catalog and are subject to fines and fees when returned late.


Video Use

Syracuse University faculty and graduate students may borrow videos and DVD’s for up to three days. Undergraduate students may borrow videos/DVD’s for three hours with one renewal. Undergraduate students may also borrow videos for 24 hours to use in a classroom presentation with permission from their instructor after completing the Student Classroom Video Use Form.  

Faculty and graduate students needing videos and DVDs for classroom use should reserve and book items in advance. Videos should be booked as soon as the show date is known, but no later than seven days before the planned showing. Booking can be done online through Medianet in the library's catalog or by calling 443-2438 or emailing multimed@syr.edu.

Videos may be picked up at 4th floor Video/Limited Access service desk or at the 1st floor Circulation desk, if specified in advance.  At the time of booking, faculty may also request that videos be delivered to their departmental office. Requests for delivery must be made at least three business days prior to the show date. To request delivery, select the delivery option on the Medianet request form or contact the Video/Limited Access desk at 443-2438 or multimed@syr.edu.

Videos may be returned at either the 4th floor Video/Limited Access service desk or at the 1st floor Circulation desk. Faculty may arrange to have videos picked up at department offices by emailing delivery@syr.edu prior to the due date.

Instructors may request that the Library purchase a new video title by emailing multimed@syr.edu.

Viewing Facilities

The library also provides in-library viewing facilities for use of the video collection. Other equipment such as headphones and sound junction boxes are available from the Video/Limited Access service desk. Inquire at the Video/Limited Access service desk for group viewing options as well as 16mm film viewing.

Video Course Reserves

Syracuse University faculty and teaching assistants may place Library videos on course reserve for a two week period at any point during the semester. Faculty and Teaching Assistants may place personally owned videos on reserve for an entire semester subject to any copyright restrictions.

Music Collection

In addition to music books and scores, the Library maintains a collection of records, compact discs, and music cassette tapes. The collection contains music ranging from classical (Western and non-Western), jazz, folk, world, and popular music genres to musical theater. All items in the music collection can be found in the online catalog and are subject to fines and fees when returned late.

Limited Access Collection

The Limited Access Collection, located on the 4th floor, contains heavily used essential titles intended primarily for use in the Library. Materials from this collection circulate for limited time periods. The collection includes catalogues raisonnées of major architects and artists, scores for Broadway musicals, and a variety of texts in architecture, music, and the arts. All items in the Limited Access collection can be found in the online catalog and are subject to fines and fees when returned late.

Digitizing Equipment

The Video, Limited Access, and Music area has several workstations dedicated to the transfer of materials in existing paper, audio, video, and slide formats into various digital end products. Instruction manuals are available or or users can contact Stephen Singer at stsinger@syr.edu (Phone: 315.443.1190) or Richard Ortiz at riortiz@syr.edu (Phone: 315.443.5780) to arrange an appointment for technical assistance. Appointments can be made for times between 10:00 am - 8:00 pm Monday through Friday. Please book 24 hours in advance.
